SCARF TYING

When I was bald from chemo I wore no headcovering; no wig, hat or scarf.

Most folks do though, so I asked Ruth Wolf to help me write a page about scarves. Well, she did a wonderful job with pictures, captions and even modeled the scarves herself!

Thanks Ruth! I couldn't have done it! - Susan

Scrunchies They come in 2 sizes and various textures. Often the smaller size is easier to use when used as follows. They can be embellished by sewing on pearls, sequins, crystals, rhinestones, etc.. on the edge. This can be seen on the bottom black scrunchie in the photo.

Wired hair ties. These and the scrunchies are sold at kiosks in shopping malls.

Turbans come in a wide variety of colors.

Clip on a puffy bow on the side of a turban. These bows are also sold at mall kiosks.

Same clip on bow placed on the back of the turban.

Add hat to turban. Simple but good look.

Use one long scarf, tie with single knot on side over ear. Isn't too secure yet, but will be.

Add contrasting color long scarf. Tie with single knot and then taking both colors, tie to secure both together.

Add scrunchie. These tend to fall off and get lost. I use a straight pin to hold it. Please be careful not to stick your head!

Add a hat.

For variety twist ends and secure with pins.

With a square scarf, form a triangle, knot securely over ear and add scrunchie.

Square scarf. Put on same as above but do not knot. Wrap with an elastic band to secure and pull some of the scarf through the elastic. Gives a poofy look.

This is one of my favorites. Use 2 square scarves - same design, different colors.

Put the first on as described above.

Fold the second scarf into a narrow strip, wrap it around and tie both scarves together.

Add scrunchie.

Scarves and scrunchie as described above (red and black).

Twist together wired hair ties (see photo #2).

Wrap around head, secure under scrunchie.

Black long scarf tied at side. Pin on opposite side.

White long scarf.

Add silver scarf and knot both together.

Add long lace scarf (lace ribbon can be used), add silver scrunchie.

Simple and easy. I used a white square scarf and an old tie my husband was getting rid of!

The next section shows variations with the same scarf tying as above.

Basic two long scarves and scrunchie.

Add a hat.

Add ribbon to the hat.

Add a flower.

The finished look.

General hints:

I have tried more complicated scarf tying but find the basic ideas shown here to be the quickest and easiest. By varying colors, textures and accessories, they always have a different look and can match clothing. Use one scarf or combine two or more.

Cotton scarves hold the head the best but can be hard to find.

Some people might feel more secure wearing a turban under the scarf especially until they have more practice with them.

At first it might seem time consuming but with a little practice scarf tying can be done quickly.

Hair accessories that can be added include headbands, wired bands, clip-ons, ribbons, bows, flowers, jewelry(good use for single earings), etc... Use imagination for trims and decorations.

A special thanks to Pat Eisenhut, a BCforum friend, for all the help with cropping, formating and for not having a heart attack when he saw the number of pictures involved in the project!!!! - Susan

Every year about 181,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer and 44,000 die of the disease. Every other day I will add one person to the "Faces of Breast Cancer" Gallery to represent the approximate 1000 that are diagnosed during that two day time period.
