MAD HATTERS' TEA PARTY EVENT SYNOPSIS

The Breast Cancer Listserv's 1998 annual face to face was held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada over the weekend of August 21-23, 1998.

The Party began Friday evening with dinner in the Penthouse.

We had a gorgeous view of the city which even provided a rainbow for us us!

The Calgary Committe greeted us with hugs and smiles.

Saturday morning we met in the Alberta Room where brunch was available from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Everyone introduced themselves including Gugal ,

Barb Watson got us all moving, jumping up and down and laughing while we sang "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean," (her instructions were to stand and sit for every word beginning with B) and "Let Me Call You Sweatheart" (sung with no pronouns!) and

SO's partners and husbands of BC survivors had a workshop.

In the afternoon various listers met with Rasa Lila for a Qong Qi session with Bobbie Rivere for some aerobic exercising, Musa Mayer showed the video she had made in Portland, and Sandy Saunders delivered more T-shirts!

In the evening at dinner we met Linda Jeffery's wonderful Grandma.

We applauded as Sue Hunter received the Fran Liberatore-Reed memorial award,

danced
(Sandy Saunders, Gal with Camera, Naomi Friedman, Bobbie Rivere, Betsy Driscoll, Joane Cardinal-Schubert)

and watched those who had not brought hats make fabulous hats with their napkins so they could become
official hat judges

We ended the evening going to the Olympic Park to remember those on the list who have died since we met in Portland.

Paula Campbell read the names.

Sunday morning we met for a Stampede Breakfast/meeting and on the internet with those who could not come. We heard the financial report, became honorary Calgarians (we all had the opportunity to tell everyone what this meant to us in three words or less!)

(Nick Christoff becoming an honorary Calgarian)

and remembered our 22 friends who died since we met in Portland, OR.

On a table were 22 roses, a three candle candlabra and a tall candle.

The lights went out for two minutes and we remembered.

Barb Watson sang, the lights came back on.

We listened to a poem written by Paula Campbell about our meeting, received more door prizes, laughed, enjoyed one another, hugged, said our farewells and promised to meet again next year!

Every year about 181,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer and 44,000 die of the disease. Every other day, one person will be added to the Faces of Breast Cancer Gallery to represent the approximate 1000 that are diagnosed during that two day time period.
