BCFORUM'S 1997 FACE TO FACE

Over the weekend of July 25-27, 1997, members of Bcforum, the Internet Breast Cancer Support Group met in Denver Colorado

I landed in Denver a few minutes earlier than my scheduled 1:19 PM arrival. My daughter, Rachael asked, "How will you know them?"

"Don't worry, they've seen my photo from the papers."

After about 15 minutes of waiting in a strategic location at the gate for a stranger to rush up and hug me, I walked over to the courtesy phone.

"Alan Esworthy, please come to Gate 49," resounded through the airport.

Then I heard, "Susan Frisius, please come to Carousel 3."

What to do? I picked up the courtesy phone. "Yes, your page has been picked up and you should go to Carousel 3."

Off I went towing my carryon over moving ramps, down and up escalators and in a monorail.

Carousel 3 was deserted.

I picked up the courstesy phone and soon heard,

"Alan Esworthy, please come to Carousel 3."

I waited. Nothing. So back to the phone I went.

"Madame Zonga, please come to Carousel 3."

I watched passengers walking here and there in small groups. I debated if I should page again. Were they waiting at the gate as I was at the Carousel?

"Is that them?" asked Rachael.

They were almost upon us, Zonga and UncleAl with a HUGE hot pink BCFORUM sign held high up over his head I had completely missed.

At the hotel, Red slipped her key in the door as she said, "and I left the keys to my suitcase on the kitchen counter! Talk about chemo brain."

She looked at her hand and asked, "Where's my room key?"

"In the door?" asked Zonga.

That was when Red decided to wear her keys as earings so she would not lose them (she put her studs through a hole in each card) and she hung the small lock, which we removed from her suitcase with my carryon key, to one of the keycards.

Dee and Bill arrived soon thereafter.

UncleAl brought White Russian fixings and we soon found out that Zonga's legendary White Russians are just that, Legendary!

Kath and Lynn joined us for dinner, Kath was only going to stay for a few minutes to eat but ended up being the last to want to leave.

Saturday morning was hike in the mountains time. Zonga, UncleAl, and Lynn did 1.4 miles and went back to prepare for the twilight barbeque. Red, Lynn and I went for an additional 3 miles, well I should say Kath and I because Red was nowhere to be seen, she took off like a giraffe and periodically called down to us from above.

We saw fields of butterflies. The shaded side of the hills had small birds scratching in the moist leaves. They jumped twice in place and scratched the leaves looking for tidbits. We heard lizards, saw some gorgeous wildflowers and enjoyed magnificent views. But best were the fantastic "Red Rocks" that jut out of the ground. They all lean at the same angle and are hundreds of feet high. You can see them standing in rows for miles.

Saturday lunch was at Jose O'Sheas.

Left to right: UncleAl's ex mother in law, Susan, Scott (Susan's nephew), Rachael (Susan's daughter, almost hidden), Laine (Rachael's friend). On the right side of the table it is Dee (almost hidden) Lynn, Zonga and UncleAl.

We were joined by friends and relatives and a Denver Post reporter and photographer. Zonga showed off her cleavage which impressed the photographer especially as she told him she had had a double Mastectomy.

"No way will they print these photos, we are a family paper," he said, but he kept right on taking pictures. And they did print this shot of her:

Lynn is on the left and Zonga is on the right.

Lynn's family is a delight. They all pitched in to make us feel at home for the twilight barbeque that night, and we did!

Daughter Brittany made scrumptious dips and a beautifully laid out fruit salad made from a lovely bowl of fruit sent by Patti. The shish kabobs were great as were the grilled veggies.

Lynn

Sunday morning I was awakened by Lynn's squeals of joy as she read the Denver Post. She rushed out and got 20 copies. You really can't imagine how high 20 copies of a Sunday paper are on a dining room table.

KUSA, the local NBC channel, came at 2:00 to interview us and we did a little rendition of bcforum in words rather than in letters.

The sky was dark and stormy on the ride to the airport.

"When was the last time you saw a rainbow?" asked Zonga.

A magnificent huge rainbow was off to the right.

A few miles later UncleAl spotted one on the left and then Lynn saw another on the right. Three rainbows, all at the same time.

It had been a rainbow weekend.
