The Bcforum Afghan

One of BCforum's members, Gwen Taylor, called herself "elway" when she was in the bcforum chatroom. She was one of the original members.

When she began to have a difficult time with her treatments, we decided to make her an afghan. Each of us made a ribbon to put on one of the afghan squares. On these ribbons we put the nickname we use in bcforum, our state or other-than-US-country, and a quality we wished to give to her. We wanted to send her our love and the qualities we put into the afghan.

Gwen died on November 22, 2000

The Afghan was donated to the Livingston Hospital in Gwen's name for patients going through chemo. The cards that came with the quilt are available to be read and other patients will have a roll of pink ribbon available so that people can attach their own little piece of themselves to it.

The ribbons were added to the site in the order in which they arrived.

This ribbon is pink like the breast cancer awareness ribbon to remind you that many dedicated people are searching for a cure and it will be found.
The thread is green to remind you that even though the trees lose their leaves and the grass turns brown in the winter, spring brings renewal.
For all the tomorrows, for all the seasons, for the miracle of spring, for the love of all of us who care about you, I put HOPE in this ribbon.
For all the small blessings that come our way each day, a smile, a flower a candy bar, I put JOY in this ribbon.
For each moment to treasure, for kindness given and received, for the feel of sunshine, I put LIFE in this ribbon.

Butterflies - Peace and feeling free
Lady Bug - Tranquility and good luck

I put Serenity in this ribbon so there will always be a quiet place, completely still, for you to go.
With Serenity, you'll find truth and beauty, too, and all that is the real, the essential YOU.

I stitched laughter in this ribbon,
I threw in the best jokes I know,
All the funny movies I've seen,
Every hysterical book I've read,
Gags and children's tricks were added to the fabric;
And no true comedy was omitted.
I did this so no day will ever pass
Without bringing you a laugh!

I chose Faith and Trust because we must not only believe God cares,
but trust that he will take care of us.
As it is so beautifully expressed in this lovely poem by Keith Bennet:

When His eye is on the sparrow
And each budding leaf that grows;
And He sends the dew each morning
And the sunshine to the rose;
You may know beyond all doubting,
In this trial you're passing through,
God cares..... and every moment
He is watching over you!

I chose the color Green (not only to add a little earthly luck of the Irish)
but to remind you of the Old Irish Prayer.
I do believe that God is holding you in the palm of His hand.
You are in our prayers every day, my darling,
and we are trusting God to restore you to good health
so that you may use the many talents He has given just to you.

Linda wrote:

Elway, I picked "Faith" because faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Even though you don't see the healing manifesting in your body right now, I want faith to overtake you.

In those times when fear comes, I want that scripture to rise up and take hold of you. I picked the white ribbon because of Jesus' purity. And I picked red for the writing because the blood of Jesus was shed for our healing. "By His stripes, you are healed."

You have so many people praying for you, encouraging you, believing with you. I hope you can feel the numbers that are supporting you, you are not in this alone.

In this ribbon I have COMFORT, and comfort is for those difficult days. In fact;

"I wish for you..."
Comfort on difficult days,
Smiles when sadness intrudes,
Rainbows to follow the clouds,
Laughter to kiss your lips,
Sunsets to warm your heart,
Gentle hugs when spirits sag,
Friendships to brighten your being,
Beauty for your eyes to see,
Confidence for when you doubt,
Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.

I give you my bow to send you PEACE.

The Lavender is a color of equilibrium, replenishing and rebuilding.
May it be a tonic for your body and your spiritual self.

The Purple is a color of protection.
May you surround yourself with it and allow only that which you want and consider to be good into your life.

May you always be able to find that place within yourself where you feel completely calm, safe and at PEACE.
