Breast cancer survivors' group to meet at Enid's Camp Rhodes

August 4, 1999

By Janna Ogden

A couple of months after losing her mother to cancer, Marcia LaMunyon was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After her Aug. 1, 1997, diagnosis, she had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation as part of her treatment.

Her husband, Larry, bought her a computer for her recovery time.

"To take my mind off it and let me do research," she said.

She came across a Web site created by Susan Frisius that includes a group that meets in a chat room called Faces of Breast Cancer. The site has photographs of survivors and victims. It also includes updates on those who have been in the group, which includes both men and women.

"I got on the computer and I got this group," she said.

This was about a year and a half ago.

Members of the group are close, LaMunyon said.

While her family has been supportive, LaMunyon said, they just haven't been through the same experience. As a matter of fact, her daughter-in-law, Karla, is attending the meeting with her.

The group gets together in person about once a year.

This year, the group decided to meet in Oklahoma. LaMunyon was able to rent the lodge at Camp Rhodes, the Camp Fire Boys and Girls campground.

It's going to be an exciting thing." she said.

The group has no definite plans except crystal digging at Great Salt Plains State Park. She said six to seven members are coming from around the nation.

"We want to spend time talking and getting to know one another," LaMunyon said, "We want to talk like other people talk."

So far, all their communication has been through the chat room.

Profits from books sold on the Web site are used to help those who can't afford to travel.

The group is meeting at Camp Rhodes Friday afternoon and will stay there through Saturday evening. A cookout Sunday will be held at LaMunyon's house.
